Leaving the lush Karakol Valley for the cold and barren Ala Kul.
On the third day of my five-day hike in the Terskey Ala-Too mountain range in Kyrgyzstan, I left the comforts of a yurt in the middle of the Karakol Valley and headed up towards the frozen alpine lake Ala Kul. As I climbed, the forests thinned and soon did the shrubs. I traced the stream up the mountain. I turned back, and without the cover of the trees, I could see all the way back across Karakol Valley to the next valley and beyond. It was a long way since I began. More to look forward to, yet with much to look back on. More on the journey here.
