The Tool Box That Became a Watch Box. The Tool Watch Box is what happens when two familiar worlds — tool watches and EDC — meet inside an object never intended to hold either. A collaboration between RSM Watch Strap and the UK's Form + Function Podcast, it started with what seemed, in hindsight, like an obvious idea: why not turn the iconic Toyo Steel T-320 toolbox into a proper watch box?

Since 1969, Toyo Steel has been making its distinctive steel toolboxes in Higashi-Osaka, Japan. Built from a single sheet of steel using deep-drawing technology, the boxes are strong, lightweight and deliberately uncomplicated. Originally designed for the workshop, the humble toolbox has since found a life beyond tools, appreciated for its versatility and honest industrial design.

For the Tool Watch Box, the exterior remains unmistakably Toyo Steel. The transformation happens inside.

Working within the compact T-320, RSM and Form + Function reimagined the interior architecture to accommodate six watches and a spring-bar tool. EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate) foam — a lightweight, resilient and cushioning material — soft on its surface to prevent scratches while being firm enough to hold each watch securely. Custom-cut EVA foam creates individual compartments, with a lower density wave pattern under the lid that gently secures each watch in position while adding visual rhythm to the utilitarian interior.

The clever part is how the watches sit. Rather than disappearing into deep cavities, each watch case stands proud of the foam, creating a neat row of watches on display. Open the lid and the experience is surprisingly close to opening a boutique display — only this collection sits inside a hardy Japanese steel toolbox.
