The Hornady Soft Rifle Case is a 48-inch padded transport solution designed to protect rifles during storage and travel with heavy-duty nylon Cordura construction.
This 48-inch padded rifle case features two exterior zippered pockets and is made of tough, nylon Cordura® for strength and durability. Imported.Protection and Padding
The internal padding system cushions your rifle against impacts and bumps during transport. Thick foam lining runs the full length of the case, creating a protective barrier between your firearm and the outside world. The padding compresses slightly to accommodate rifles with mounted optics while still maintaining secure positioning. A soft interior fabric layer prevents scratches to your rifle's finish, bluing, or stock.
What rifles fit in this case?
The 48-inch length accommodates most bolt-action hunting rifles, semi-automatic sporting rifles, and tactical rifles with barrels up to 24 inches. Rifles with standard scopes mounted can fit comfortably without needing removal. Breakdown shotguns and takedown rifles also store easily. The internal width handles rifles with synthetic stocks, wood stocks, and chassis systems. If your rifle measures under 47 inches overall with optics, it will fit with room to spare.
Storage Compartments
Two exterior zippered pockets provide organized storage for accessories. The pockets are sized to hold magazines, ammunition boxes, cleaning supplies, ear protection, shooting glasses, or a small rangefinder. Interior mesh pockets keep smaller items like Allen wrenches, screwdrivers, or lens cloths separated and easy to locate. The zipper pulls are oversized for operation with gloves in cold weather.
Cordura Construction Benefits
Hornady selected nylon Cordura fabric for its resistance to tears, scuffs, and abrasion. This military-grade textile handles repeated use without fraying at stress points. The material resists water absorption, so light rain or snow won't soak through to your rifle during short exposures. Cordura also cleans easily with a damp cloth when dirt or mud accumulates. The fabric maintains its shape over years of use rather than sagging or losing structure.
Transport and Carry Options
A full-length zipper with dual pulls allows opening from either end for quick access. The padded carry handle sits at the balance point for comfortable single-hand transport. A removable shoulder strap distributes weight across your body when walking longer distances from vehicle to shooting position. The strap adjusts for different body sizes and can be detached completely when not needed.
Who should buy this rifle case?
- Hunters transporting rifles to the field or range
- Shooters who need basic protection without hard case bulk
- Gun owners storing rifles in closets or under beds
- Travelers flying with firearms as checked luggage (inside hard case)
- Range shooters carrying rifles to shooting bays
Care and Maintenance
Wipe down the exterior with a damp cloth after exposure to dirt or moisture. Allow the case to air dry completely before storing firearms inside to prevent condensation buildup. Check zippers periodically for debris that might cause binding. Store the case flat or hanging to maintain the padding shape. The Cordura material does not require waterproofing treatments or special cleaners.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I lock this case?
The zipper pulls have holes that accept small padlocks for basic security during storage or transport. This meets requirements for some shooting ranges and hunting areas that mandate locked cases.
Does it work for air travel?
This soft case must be placed inside a hard-sided, lockable container for airline travel per TSA regulations. It works well as an inner protective layer inside larger hard cases.
How much does the case weigh?
The empty case weighs under three pounds, so it adds minimal weight to your total carry load when moving gear.
