WHAT WE LOVE:
The Oris Big Crown Pointer Date is one of the longest-running and most coherent product propositions in the Swiss watch industry — a watch that has been produced in recognisably the same form since 1938, built around a date display mechanism that does not appear anywhere else in the modern Swiss watch catalogue at Oris's price point. The pointer date uses a dedicated hand that features a slender red-tipped arrow circling the inner chapter ring of date numerals 1–31 — to indicate the current date. Where a conventional date window shows the numeral directly, the pointer date advances the hand incrementally around the dial's circumference, creating a complication that is continuously visible without any aperture interruption of the dial layout.
The two-tone configuration of this specific example is the most visually warmth-laden of the Big Crown Pointer Date's format options: the stainless steel case with its rose gold PVD coated bezel, the matching rose gold Arabic numerals and indexes, and the fleur-de-lis hands in rose gold tone create a combination that reads beautifully. The silver guilloché dial — with its fine crosshatch pattern visible under direct light — adds a gorgeous surface quality. The coin-edge bezel in rose gold tone connects to the Big Crown's original 1930s-era design language.
