WHAT WE LOVE:
The Glashütte Spezimatic is the product of one of the most remarkable chapters in the history of watchmaking and one that very few collectors outside Germany have fully explored. After the Second World War, the legendary watchmaking town of Glashütte found itself in East Germany, and the individual watch companies that had defined the town's reputation were nationalised into a single state enterprise: VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe, or GUB. What GUB produced over the following four decades was, by any objective standard, exceptional: movements with more jewels per calibre than most Swiss equivalents, better regulation and adjustment specifications than the market demanded, and finishing standards that reflected the town's pre-war tradition rather than any concession to mass production.
The Spezimatic "Bison" is GUB's automatic dress watch of the 1970s, the "Bison" designation appearing on the dial alongside "26 Rubis," confirming the Calibre 75's uncommonly high jewel count for an automatic dress movement of this period. The cushion-shaped case in chrome plated brass with its characteristically angular 1970s profile, houses the circular silver dial with its gold-tone applied step markers. The date window at 3 o'clock is the single complication.
