WHAT WE LOVE:
The Radcliffe Le Dome is one of the genuinely distinctive watchmaking propositions to have emerged from the independent microbrand world — a watch whose display architecture is unlike anything produced at any comparable price point. Rather than hands sweeping a flat dial, the Le Dome uses two CNC-machined 3D rotating domes to display the time: a rotating hour dome at the upper register showing the numeral of the current hour, and a rotating minute dome at the lower register showing the current minute. Both domes are machined on 5-axis CNC equipment from a single piece of metal, their interiors carrying a guilloché pattern that refracts light through the double-domed sapphire crystal above in a way that changes as the light angle changes. The central open-heart aperture reveals the balance wheel of the movement below — a visual connection between the display architecture and the mechanism driving it.
The blue guilloché dial configuration is visually compelling from the Le Dome Classic range: the deep cobalt blue of the main dial ground, the contrasting black minute dome disc with its luminous numerals, the Super-LumiNova C3 filled hour/minute indicators that glow through both the guilloché surface and the sapphire domes in darkness, and the rose gold-tone oscillating rotor visible through the exhibition caseback create a watch that rewards extended attention. The double-domed sapphire crystal — curved to magnify the domes below — adds the final layer of optical depth to a display that photographs cannot fully convey. At 40mm × 16mm (including the dome height), with 30-metre water resistance and a black leather strap, this is a watch designed to be looked at closely.
