WHAT WE LOVE:
The Radcliffe Le Dome is one of the genuinely distinctive watchmaking propositions to have emerged from the independent microbrand world — a watch whose display architecture is unlike anything produced at any comparable price point. Rather than hands sweeping a flat dial, the Le Dome uses two CNC-machined 3D rotating domes to display the time: a rotating hour dome at the upper register showing the numeral of the current hour, and a rotating minute dome at the lower register showing the current minute. Both domes are machined on 5-axis CNC equipment from a single piece of metal, their interiors carrying a guilloché pattern that refracts light through the double-domed sapphire crystal above in a way that changes as the light angle changes. The central open-heart aperture reveals the balance wheel of the movement below — a visual connection between the display architecture and the mechanism driving it.
The black guilloché configuration is the most simplistic of the Le Dome Classic range — the charcoal black of the dial ground against the white luminous numerals on the rotating domes creates the sharpest possible contrast, and the exhibition of the balance wheel through the central aperture reads with maximum drama against the dark background. The double-domed sapphire crystal — curved to magnify the domes below — and the rose gold-tone guilloché oscillating rotor visible through the caseback are the two details that reward close inspection, both delivering a visual density that far exceeds what the watch's price point would suggest. At 40mm × 16mm total height (including the dome), with 30-metre water resistance and a black leather strap, this is a watch that occupies its own specific category.
