A distinctive Aesthetic Movement walnut hall chair, circa 1870 to 1880, of sturdy, architectural form in the Reformed Gothic taste associated with designers such as Bruce Talbert and Charles Eastlake. The solid panelled back is crowned by a shaped, arched cresting rail centred with a small inlaid lozenge of mother-of-pearl and contrasting woods, a charming and unexpected detail. The sweeping, scrolled arms flow down into solid trestle-style end supports, each pierced and incised with delicate carved decoration, and joined by a single turned stretcher. The broad solid seat is nicely moulded at the edge, with a small shaped apron beneath. The walnut has aged to a rich, deep chestnut brown with a lovely soft patina, and the figuring in the back panel is particularly attractive. Chairs of this type were made to stand in a hallway, and it remains ideal for that purpose, though it would work equally well as a characterful desk chair, a bedroom seat or a striking accent piece in a study. Solid, handsome and full of Victorian confidence, this is a most appealing chair in good original condition.
