A neat Arts and Crafts oak writing table, circa 1900 to 1910, of compact and very practical proportions. The rectangular top is inset with a leather writing surface within a plain oak border, and sits above a single frieze drawer fitted with period copper-toned handles of stylised, Art Nouveau-influenced form and a simple keyhole escutcheon. A moulded band runs beneath the drawer, and the shaped corner brackets, or spandrels, add a gentle touch of decoration to what is otherwise a clean and uncluttered design. The table stands on four slender, tapering legs finishing in neat pad feet, giving it a light and upright presence. The oak has aged to a warm, honeyed brown with a soft, waxed patina, and the leather shows the honest wear you would expect of a piece that has seen genuine use. At this scale it is wonderfully adaptable, equally suited to a bedroom or study as a small desk, a hall table, or a dressing table. Understated, well made and very easy to live with, this is a most appealing little table in good original condition.
